CBS, the final frontier, to boldly go where no other network has gone before. The network ushered in a new era with its new streaming service CBS All Access. The crown jewel of the service is more than likely the upcoming, new, “Star Trek” series; it will be released in the standard broadcast format of weekly episodes in contrast to the “binge your life away” format, popularized by streaming behemoth Netflix. CBS executive Les Moonves confirmed the news in an earnings report; it reported by “Star Trek” site Trekcore. In January of 2016, CBS president Glenn Geller exclaimed that he and the CBS Broadcast Network were not as involved in the production of the series, saying: "It really is for All Access. While the network will be broadcasting the pilot, I actually can't answer any creative questions about it."
The unnamed “Star Trek” series is set to make its debut in January of 2017, but the series is still shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that it will be handled by Bryan Fuller, the creator of Hannibal, Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies who is also a veteran writer of “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. The new series will also feature an all-new cast of characters but will adhere to the traditional “Star Trek” themes. The new characters will have to also explore new settings and planets
In regards to recurring themes in “Star Trek”, fans can also expect traditional team based themes like friendship and sacrifice in the new series. While both are common themes in almost every show, not to mention everyday life, they stick out in “Star Trek” specifically because the space franchise focuses on people of varying backgrounds working together to achieve a common goal. We feel the emotional strings being wrenched when Spock sacrifices himself for his friend Kirk and the comradery of the crew is one of the most relatable elements by sci-fi show standards.
