Anime Review: Love Stage: A Cross Dressing Cocktease

The story follows Izumi Sena, an 18yr college attendee that is doing everything in his power to steer clear of the family business. His mother is a famous actress while his father is in musical theater. Together, his parents own a talent agency that is run by a man named Ren who lives in the house along with the star-studded family. Even Izumi’s older brother (Shougo) is the lead singer of a famous rock band. Izumi wants to be a manga artist and actively stays as far from the limelight as possible. Too bad he has no artistic talent when it comes to drawing but Izumi soon learns that star power runs in his blood when he is called to recreate a commercial he co-starred in 10 years ago. The only problem? He was dressed as a girl back then. With the help of three makeup artists, he is transformed once again into an alluring actress that has caught the attention of famous actor Ryouma, who has been in love with Izumi’s masquerade for the past ten years.

Review: If I hadn't been introduced to this type (shounen-ai) of anime via Junjo Romantica, then my feelings about this might be different. However, it is a really good anime. The characters are amazingly fleshed out and the romantic aspects are adorable. The storyline is complete, which makes me want more episodes. However, unlike Junjo Romantica, the "sex" aspect is lacking. As a romance, it's adorable and I feel like it's meant for a slightly younger crowd. The story is beautiful and progresses in what feels like the natural evolution of the relationship. Of course, obstacles come into play like family members and internal conflicts regarding sexuality but each of these issues is addressed in a way that makes you feel closer to the main characters and wants them to be together. The world created around these two is amazingly detailed and even though Izumi and Ryouma have different personalities they complement each other in a unique way. This anime is based on a manga by the same name. While I find this season to be adorable, if this show gets another season, I hope they will expand on the secondary relationship that exists between Ren and Shougo. Also, if you hadn’t gotten the message by now, this is a romantic anime based on two males. So, if that’s not your thing don’t watch this. Hopefully, this show returns for another season before I forget it exists.

Final Rating: Energy Optimized (4/5)
