TV Reviews: The Librarians: S2E4: And the Cost of Education

A college where there is revelry in the streets is where this episode begins and the mascot leaves the street to go to a nearby house party. He hears something, but brushes it off and continues up the streets, then stops suddenly turns around just as a tentacle grabs him and pulls him into the mysterious hole from whilst it came. The school just happens to be Wexler, which is super weird full of magic and mystery.

The group splits up Ezekiel and Cassandra go to the frat house to investigate the disappearance while Jake and Eve go talk to a professor about the architecture and the occult. Cassandra and Ezekiel meet a young girl (Lucy) who is also searching for magic and search the house with her only to be disappointed when the biggest secret the frat boys are hiding is beer pong. Ezekiel however steals enough of the frat boys stuff to fill his pockets.

Meanwhile Jake and Eve meet with the professor who doesn’t believe in the occult and tells Jake that his question about magic is the stupidest question he has ever heard he is then promptly he gets pulled into a mysterious hole by a tentacle. Jake takes over the class for the good professor where he and the class discover the college is built in a summoning circle which helps bring the creature onto the campus.

While Cassandra and Lucy search the building that just happens to have her particle accelerator inside. Cassandra discovers that Lucy is summoning the creature unwittingly with her device. The team discovers what monster it is and that it feeds on pride. Lucy of course not knowing any of this goes on a prideful rant about how amazing she is and that she will win a Nobel Prize the tentacle monster quickly takes Lucy as well. Cassandra then makes a unilateral decision that the team will go after Lucy, who should be dead but whatever. However by going after Lucy they endanger an entire gym full of people because in order to get out Lucy they have to open the rift again. They even use one of their own team members as bait for a girl that they don’t know really and whose actions cause the deaths of two people.

Cassandra recreates Lucy’s device and is basically going to follow the monster's signature back to its home world by creating a hole like it did. Cassandra wanders around the new world and Lucy finds her. They avoid being eaten, but Lucy is ahead of Cassandra and makes it through the hole first Cassandra gets grabbed by the monster, but is saved by a woman that invites Cassandra to come join them in-between space and time. They are women chosen to be part of the lake where people who truly understand magic study and grow. Cassandra declines, but the woman tell her it’s an open offer and they will save a place for her. While the group celebrates Jenkins has a word with Cassandra and warns her about the lake she reminds him that she chose to stay.

Review: This episode should have been called Cassandra finding her voice because everything was about her. I did enjoy the episode even though this episode felt like filler since it didn’t really add to my knowledge of Prospero or help him further his cause either. The episode provides in-depth character Knowledge so I can’t hate it, but I’m taking point off since it didn’t move the main story forward. Also I’m deducting a point because Lucy was the only one that survived and can continue doing magic at her wimp. I’m sure that won’t mess anything up.

Final Score: 6/10 Power Ups
