TV Reviews: The Librarians: S2E01: The Drowned Book

This was a two hour season premiere and boy did it start the season off well. We begin exactly where we ended at the season one finale. Magic has been released into the world filling the cracks and veins and once again creating problems too big for one librarian. We find out that the trio decided to go off separately and haven’t seen each other in months. The group is splintered, each with a part of the clippings book, and following whatever may lead to the next artifact.

The library (after returning from the void) is missing rooms. Jenkins discovers this but keeps it to himself and tries to fix the problem. Meanwhile, all of the librarians are forced to gather (after the clippings book gives them assignments) after being months apart. They all gather at a Manhattan museum, each after different artifacts. Eve wants everyone to work as a team, but considering the fact that none of them have been in the same room for months, no one else seems to like that plan. Flynn is investigating the a ship wreck, Jake is searching for a chess set, Cassandra is looking into the weather systems sonar device inside the museum and Ezekiel is trying to steal a pair of pearl earrings from a diplomat’s daughter. Each job has its own set of challenges that brings the group together despite them repeatedly trying to go off in their own individual directions.

We find out that Professor Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes archenemy) is being controlled by Prospero (A magician from Shakespeare’s The Tempest). Prospero felt slighted by Shakespeare after being forced to renounce his magic and with the help or Moriarty, he is determined to get the ending he feels he deserves. Prospero gathers various objects so that they align with his story and he can regain his magic. Ultimately the dysfunction of the team helps Prospero achieve his goal and he gets his book of magic before the team even puts the pieces together. Flynn puts the pieces together after Prospero tells his sad tale of a writer with too much power that forced him to give up his power. Prospero escapes capture with his newly acquired magic leaving a huge hurricane behind. When the librarians finally start working as a group they dispel the hurricane and the trio decides to come back to the library and help defeat Prospero.

Review:

This was a great opening to this two hour premiere. The level starts high and I can’t wait to see what the next part will bring. The scattered team rejoined against a new threat and foe. The library is back but still in danger but hey at least the bands back together.

Final Score: 8/10 Power Ups
