This is, by far, the best episode of ‘Surviving’. We got plenty of sisterly bonding moments. The actress who plays Lucy was endearing and Shayla (played by Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) did very well.
We start the episode with the girls stopping their truck in the middle of the woods. They start walking to an unknown location. Lucy asks Shayla where are they and Shayla answers at the military base. Shayla explains further that their dad is inside and that they will break him out. Of course Lucy wants to join her but Shayla is against it. Lucy defends that she can handle herself and that was proven when she handled the men at Leonard’s home. Shayla says that Lucy did do well but she is visibly shaken and Lucy explains that it was her first kill. The back and forth continues between the two until Shayla asks her if she can take on a man comes up to her with a gun in her face.
This is where the games begin. Shayla pretends to point a gun at Lucy and Lucy disarms her. They then get into a sparring match where Shayla is the winner. Shayla then tells her to stay out of it but Lucy says that she is a good shot. Shayla asks her to prove it. Lucy uses a bow and arrow to shoot down a small bird on her first try. She then dares Shayla to do the same. Shayla does her one better and shoots down two birds with one arrow. Shayla even makes the same KFC joke as her dad when Lucy looked disgusted.
Back at the camp, the girls are eating with an unconscious Evan in the background. Shayla apologizes for not being in Lucy’s life. Lucy said she always imagined what Shayla was like and she could see why their father always talked proudly about Shayla. They then go on to think about the food they wished they were eating. Shayla tells Lucy its bedtime and they both tell each other they love one another for the first time.
Lucy goes to bed and Shayla notices Evan waking up. She grabs her gun and approaches him and that is how we ended this episode.
The Review:
As I stated before, this episode was phenomenal. The chemistry between the two actresses was great. I finally feel that they are sisters who do care for one another. The actress who played Lucy has shown some growth when it comes to her acting. Before it was barely bearable but now I don’t mind as much. We learned a lot about both Shayla and Lucy’s surviving skills. It seems that their father taught them well. I did enjoy the scene where Shayla took the place of her father while she was guiding Lucy into using an arrow. Funnily enough, Lucy took Shayla’s place as the confident, precocious youngster. My main issue with the series is the length. I would love get 30 minute episodes instead of the 10. I just want to see more.
Final score: 10/10 Power Ups
