TV Reviews: iZombie: Season 1 Wrap Up

Why does everything have to have a heart of gold now? There was a point in time where vampires didn’t sparkle, werewolves didn’t play basketball and zombies most certainly did not solve murders by eating brains. However in this new world where every supernatural creature is a pinnacle of virtue we meet Olivia “Liv” Moore. A former rising star who exceeded at everything. She had the perfect family, perfect boyfriend, perfect roommate who also happened to be her best friend. She was also on track to become a doctor, which had been her single desire since childhood.

Well into the second season which personally surprised me this show seems to have found the perfect mix of death and delight. Season one’s Liv’s life was looking awesome except in the social aspect. All of the studying had stripped away her social life with everyone except her mother, brother, best friend (Payton) and boyfriend (Major) until the fateful day that changed her life. The day she got invited to a boat party by a coworker.

After the boat party she woke up in a body bag as a zombie with pale white skin and hair. With a brain habit that needed feeding, she took a job at the morgue where her boss (Ravi) quickly discovered her not so subtle secret. Even the people closest to her do not know since she pushed everyone way. Still pining for the Major she stays actively involved in his life as a form of self-torture. She even watched him on a date thorough a window in his home. I’m sure that was supposed to make me feel bad for her but all I wanted to do was close my blinds.

In season one we find Liv devouring brains of victims and solving their murders as a faux psychic. By eating their brain she gets some of the individual’s mannerisms and personality traits but also the memories which I’m sure are inadmissible in court. From crazy to cranky no two brains have the same affect because we’re all unique snowflakes. She visits crime scene sand works with an officer named Clive who for some reason hasn’t realized that she takes on various personalities with each case. We also meet her zombie maker Blaine whose drug’s caused the initial zombie outbreak.

The arch rival of our heroine Blaine is a drug dealer, killer, and local business owner who also happens to be building his very own zombie army. Blaine turned the rich and famous into zombies while his “business associates” kill foster children and harvest their brains. He charges his clients thousands for steady supply and delivery of brains.

Major, who just happens to be a social worker to several of the kids that are missing, goes to exceptional lengths to find out what happened to his kids. Stumbling onto the zombie secret, he buys a gun and goes all zombie hunter but is somehow still completely unaware that his ex is a zombie. He even steals a brain from Blaine… and not just any brain the brain of an astronaut worth millions.

Meanwhile Liv is eating brains and dating a former rock star turned zombie… yes Liv who works in the morgue dates a rock star for several episodes. How did that end you ask? Well Blaine killed him… in self-defense since the rock star whose name I can’t be bothered to remember decides that he can’t allow Blaine to live thanks primarily to Liv who at the last second chickens out on her murder plan and watches as Blaine kills her boyfriend. Did I mention Blaine turned the chief of police into a zombie so any crime he commits is covered up quickly? So no justice for rock star boyfriend. Meanwhile in between dating Liv’s best friend and working a full time job Ravi manages to cure zombism well at least make two vials of a cure one for Liv and one for research.

Major with all his new zombie hunting wisdom goes into Blaine’s business and starts killing zombies. Blaine’s men capture him and throw him in the freezer until he feel like talking about Blaine’s missing brain. When Major refuses to talk, Blaine calls Liv then mortally injuries major. When Liv arrives at the business she sees the destruction Blaine has caused and cures him. That’s right ladies and gentlemen she says Blaine is too dangerous to be a zombie and cures him. Major, who is bleeding out, she turns into a zombie takes him home and puts to bed. He wakes up realizes he’s a zombie, the horror, and tell Liv how horrible she is. So she does the only thing she could to make him forgive her. She gives him the last vial of the cure. Then she rushes to the hospital where her brother is dying and the only thing that can save him is blood from his sister who happens to be his exact same rare blood type but zombie sister says no and leaves the hospital devastated.

Final Score: 7/10 power ups
