As a diehard Heroes fan, I stuck around when the series started to lose its way which was when most fled and my reward was cancellation. So as you can imagine when I heard about a Heroes reboot I was beyond excited. For weeks before the premiere I talked about the 30 second preview that drifted around the web. Once the premiere happened I realized a few things.
They basically did a carbon copy of Heroes season one like people wouldn’t notice… I noticed.
The characters are just the less famous versions of the originals or the ones that didn’t get famous from the original.
All they are really missing is save the cheerleader save the world…but they have a blonde girl that’s going to save the world with a ragtag group of people so I guess we don’t need a saying this time. They even have the Asian person but added a video game angle and the sidekick is internet famous so I guess that’s something.
The “Sylar” is a guy who says penny for you thoughts which is simultaneously boring and creepy. He doesn’t give me the Sylar feeling. If anything, I’m left wondering what exactly he does with the pennies.
So far in the series we meet the hero killing team of Luke and Joanne who are trying to avenge their son who died in a hero/human rally that was bombed. The person who took credit for the bombing was none other than Mohinder which still doesn’t make sense to me because if a hero, or “evo” as they are now called, wanted to kill people, a bomb wouldn’t be the way to do it. Mohinder specifically knows enough people that are loyal to him that could kill with an “evo” power. Then he takes credit for the bombing that killed both humans and heroes. It’s a setup but apparently no one else can see it.
Next we meet Tommy; a boy who can teleport himself and things around him. He can’t control this power after having it all his life until he befriends the girl he has a crush on and teleports a flower into ice cream. Oh joy his power is solved but wait Tommy has a secret identity. He and his mother have been running from something for years but what?
Claire version 2.0 can control elements and does a lot of element training in the icy tundra she calls home with an occasionally invisible hero named Malina.
Katana Girl is a video game based on an actual girl (Miko) who is on a mission to save her father from an evil corporation that is harvesting the Heroes powers. She uses Hiro’s sword and is transported into a video game where she fights to save her father. Injuries she sustains in the game affect her in real life which is why she nearly died when she was beaten badly.
Then we have the evil parent and the child that tries to stop them from executing their plan. However this mother (Erica) is way worse than Noah. Erica is going to destroy the world but create a “life boat” for “normal” humans. The cost for a ticket on board is the powers, freedom, and even lives of the evos. Her “henchmen” are clones of, the not so evil, Harris. He has the ability to clone himself. He can cut pieces of his body off and create duplicates. The show wants him to be way more evil than he actually is. If anything, this guy is a mild inconvenience who is easily foiled at every turn. I would have fired him for sheer incompetence since he is supposed to be “security” but no area at all seems secure.
Miko even left Tokyo, posted on social media she was coming, and no one was able to stop or slow down her movements with “evo” spotting glasses. The show wants me to care about Noah and Quentin but I don’t and I feel that their whole storyline is just filler. This story could be much shorter and the story would flow the same if not better. Personally I’ll watch it until they close the coffin on it for good.
Final Score: 7/10 Power Ups
