Harley Quinn, DC’s beloved lunatic, and Mr. J’s girlfriend and former sidekick, is a sidekick no longer. Making her debut to the big screen, Quinn, played by actress Margot Robbie, is featured in this late summer’s comic world blockbuster, Suicide Squad. Robbie is one of an all-star cast of actors and actresses who play the worst of the worst world villains, including Deadshot, Katana, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Killer Croc, Slipknot and the Joker. Amanda Waller, a high-ranking government official, the Squad must go on deadly missions to catch other villains in exchange for their somewhat freedom. This movie has been well-waited for, and with every sneak peek or the new trailer, the anticipation grows. Now, the news of having a Harley Quinn movie makes the excitement for Suicide Squad reach an all-time high. Reports say that Warner Bros. and Robbie have been in discussion about giving the psycho sweetheart her own movie. Even though this batty-villainesses, stand-alone movie, pun intended, seems to be the DC’s wildcard, Quinn won’t be starring alone.
According to the The Hollywood Report, the film plans to feature many of DC Universe’s female villains and superheroes, including having possibly Batgirl and Birds of Prey. Although no other information or details have been released, we can only speculate at Warner Bros. possible character choices and plot ideas. Maybe we will get to see Quinn’s background, her obsession/love life with the Joker and her independence as a rogue maniac. We might even get to see The Gotham City Sirens, a name of a DC comic book series by Paul Dini, referring to the trio group of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman; fingers crossed. Since Dini’s Harley Quinn comics were the drive and motivation for Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad movie, we can only hope Warner Bros. takes Robbie’s cue and use some of the storylines for the screenwriting of the film.
Quinn can definitely stand on her own, with her wacky humor and wit, internal conversations with herself, famous “punch” lines, her constant teetering between insane and sane and her consistently growing fan base. With August vastly approaching, this definitely gives DC fans more ammo in the DC movie franchise’s arsenal compared to Marvel’s and ready for Suicide Squad.
See Margot Robbie star as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad in theaters everywhere on August 5.
