Director Josh Boone Teases the New Mutants Movie Team

(Image via Josh Boone's Instagram account)

Director of the New Mutants movie, Josh Boone, teased fans with a series of conspicuous Instagram posts. Boone posted a bevy of New Mutants art, possibly teasing the team for the new film. The specific heroes posted were illustrations of Phil Noto art and the team consisted of Mirage, Magik, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, and Cannonball. The team is almost the same as the original New Mutants group, except for Magik who will be taking the place of the original leader, Karma (one of my personal favorites). Boone was not done, however, after the supposed reveal he added another image of the sidesplitting cybernetic alien shapeshifter Warlock, who first appeared in New Mutants #18 and would become the team’s comic relief character. The lineup is reminiscent of the original group created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in the ‘80s,

One interesting note is that with Colossus’ rising popularity (Deadpool); his sister, Magik, might make some interesting tie into other franchises. Magik (Ilya Rasputin) is a powerful magic user in her own right.

The hero sunspot (Roberto DeCosta) might make waves due to the fact that he is a biracial Brazilian teenager. He is a soccer prodigy in his own right, with the ability to transform his body into pure solar energy. This grants him flight and he can also fire energy blasts. A version of the character already appeared in the alternate-future sequences of X-Men: Days of Future Past, so we don’t know how this may play itself out.

A major player who might also receive other film tie-ins is Cannonball (Sam Guthrie). Cannonball has the power to zip through the air at lightning speeds, all while creating a force field around himself, turning into a human projectile.

Other members of the team shown are WOLFSBANE (Rahne Sinclair), A Scottish werewolf mutant that can turn into a bipedal wolf-girl and also Mirage(Danielle Moonstar), a telepath with other strong psychic powers.

Nothing is confirmed, however. There’s always a chance he’s just teasing fans, instead of confirming anything officially. Whether this is an attempted swerve or blindside, the film is highly anticipated. So keep New Mutants on your radar in the near future as the film is expected to be released in either late 2017 or early 2018.
