Critics Send "Suicide Squad" Back to the Drawing Board

A common complaint from critics who have watched the box office success, Batman v Superman, is that the film is not a “fun” movie and is often times labeled “joyless”. Fans, however, have mixed views when it comes to the super powered fight. While this movie is steeped in the darkness that comes with a more serious comic book film, it is still a rollercoaster ride filled with the ups and downs that come from explosive action scenes and fun cinematic beats. The weight and grittiness of the film, according to some fans, is the best part and is what separates it from other superhero movies. Perhaps, if Warner Brothers wants their next film to be a critical success, then maybe they should add more “fun” moments in future films. This could possibly explain why Suicide Squad, the next film in the DCEU franchise, is undergoing emergency reshoots to inject more humor.

Devin Faraci from Birth.Movies.Death reports that WB is spending tens of millions of dollars to reshoot scenes from Suicide Squad. According to Faraci’s source, the trailer that featured the Bohemian Rhapsody song did not accurately represent the film. Apparently, all of the jokes in the entire movie could be found in those 3 minutes. Since fans and critics responded so well to the trailer, WB wants to add more banter and jokes into the movie to make it more lighthearted. Last minute reshoots is usually not a good sign and shows the studio's lack of faith in the success of a film.

Unfortunately for me, I am not one of those people who enjoyed the latest “Suicide Squad” trailer because of all of the jokes. They weren’t my type of humor and really brought down the trailer for me but I can see the appeal to add more humor, especially since critics complained so much about the tone of Batman v Superman. I just hope that the jokes will be better than what we have seen so far. Perhaps they should take a page out of Deadpool for humor instead Marvel Studios’ produced films.

Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5th, 2016
