I decided to play this game after a long debate with myself since I have been playing a ton of mobile games and some have left a sour taste in my mouth and while this game… is far from perfect, I did find myself enjoying it more than I thought I would. The goal of the game is to acquire Heroes, upgrade their abilities and then use them in a battle to gain various loot and other abilities through leveling up. This is a free to play the game that includes in-app purchases that are available on multiple mobile platforms. The game allows players to level up quickly in the beginning but, as with all games, the higher level you achieve, the harder it will be for the player to reach the next. So there is nothing new there.
The game is slightly addictive since the system is quite balanced when it comes to fighting and leveling up. One aspect that I personally appreciated was the game doesn’t require major monetary investment in order to climb the leader boards. Although this was not always the case. The recent update balanced the PvP element because it was unfairly granting an advantage towards specific Heroes.
There is a portal within the game that allows the player to summon Heroes. The portal has four windows that each has different summoning methods such as VIP Summons (real world currency), gems (in-game currency), and honor scrolls.
Speaking of in-game currency, the game is generous with gems .these are given out in just about every quest. Honor scrolls are gained quickly if you have enough friends playing the game. Friends can be acquired in many ways with little to no effort. While some components can only be accessed by spending cash (such as VIP central and specific characters) the game gives enough content for free that I don’t feel cheated by the pay wall.
The quests and unlocking system provide enough of a challenge to keep this game interesting as the player continues through. Not to mention, the dungeon battles do not require players to team up with other players but it requires you to battle other players. The game will randomly select players within your power level to battle against but other than that it provides little to no player to player interaction which can be a plus or minus depending on the player.
One of the things I immediately noticed is the similarities between “Dungeon Boss” and “Hello Hero”. These two games share many attributes including the 3D art style. Although, I would give the slight edge to “Dungeon Boss”. While the game is similar to “Hello Hero” it does so many things better. Both are collecting games but “Dungeon Boss” wins out while “Hello Hero” has more characters to level up it forces the player to cannibalize lesser characters in order to upgrade stronger ones. “Dungeon Boss” allows players to cultivate each character without having to worry about sacrificing them. This leads to the characters being evolved and improved. In this case less is definitely more.
Dungeon Boss focused on game components like the dungeons, the quests and the Tower of Pwnage. This provides the game with multiple ways to play without being forced to collect items just for leveling up. This game also has keys that allow the player to quickly complete a stage but you have to have previously achieved three stars in a particular stage before replaying it. This allows for easy farming without being forced into repetition.
What hindered this game for me was the constant technical issues that I ran into. The game was bogged down with constant freezing and crashing. Apparently this was due to a recent update but as of writing this review, that particular bug has been fixed on android. However, it did affect my gameplay experience negatively and almost made it not worth playing.
Overall, this game would have been better if not for the constant crashing and freezing.
