We have had plenty of details revealed concerning the new “X-Men: Apocalypse” movie. From Sophie Turner (best known as Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones”) and Alexandria Shipp (best known as her role as Aaliyah in the biopic “Aaliyah: The R&B Princess”) being cast as Jean Grey and Ororo Munroe respectfully, to the big bad and the sides our favorite mutants will fall on. Speaking of big bad, this movie’s big bad is Apocalypse aka En Saba Nur. According to this iteration, he is the origin of all genetic mutation that result in the phenomenon called powers. One of his abilities, as the so called original, is the ability to control all other mutants. I am not going to go in detail about his story in the comic books, instead I will focus on the information that was presented in the trailer and my thoughts on it. I will, however, I will advise that you all check out The Rise of Apocalypse if you do not mind potential spoilers.
While there were a handful of cool moments in the trailer, I have to say that I was not impressed or inspired to see this movie when it hits theaters. I was left severely underwhelmed because of the reasons above. All of the information in the latest trailer was regurgitated from the ending of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and spoilers that hit the airwaves months ago. In addition to the lack of new and interesting snippets, we were subjected to the stunted acting of Jennifer Lawrence and Sophie Turner.I know these two actress have loyal fans out there who will say that both women are wonderful actors, and I believe them to be decent. The first scene of the trailer is Sophie Turner portraying Jean Grey and warning Charles Xavier of a vision she just had. It was like listening to someone scratch nails against a chalk board. I had to resist the urge to cover my ears. As far as Ms. Lawrence is concerned, she is still acting like Katniss Everdeen. It seems that she only knows how to play one emotion…bored. I hope this was only the cut of the trailer and we will be able to see different facets of emotion and acting capabilities from both actresses in the final film.
Onto the positives. While I can’t point out any superb bit of acting in the trailer, I can point out a few cool scenes. Seeing a badass young Storm come to life on screen was great. I am a fan of Ororo Munroe and felt absolutely robbed when Halle Barry was cast but acted so poorly in the first X-Men. She became better as the later movies were released but she still was not the storm I loved. I would have much rather a young Angela Bassett take on the mantel but the past is in the past.
Another cool moment was finally seeing James McAvoy turning into the cue ball Charles Xavier we all love by the end of the trailer.
As I stated, this trailer did not excite me but hope to see or find out more news before the May 27th 2016 release date.
