Anime Reviews: No Game, No Life: Season 1

Honestly, this is one of the best anime I have ever seen. This is one of the shows that you either love or hate there is no in between. It is based on a manga by the same name. The first season consists of 12 episodes. The story is based on two gamer siblings who together make the perfect gamer. Each of their individual skills complement the other’s which makes them amazing at games. However, life skills are something they both lack.

The siblings Sora and Shiro are better known as Blank, the best gamer ever. The name Blank is only mentioned in hushed whispers in the deepest corner of the gaming world which has led to Blank being an urban legend amongst gamers. The siblings are whisked away to a new world after beating the god of play Tet. Tet granted their wish of going to a world where they could just play games.

In the new world everything is decided by a game’s outcome; from a nation’s border to beings themselves. In the new land Tet became the “One true God” by abstaining from a war that defeated all the other gods. Once the war was settled he governed by Ten Commandments. The most important commandment is that all disputes must be settled by games.

Every episode pulls you deeper into the sibling’s story as you learn the lengths they are willing to go to for the win. Even risking their very lives many times throughout the course of the season. Their ultimate quest is to beat Tet to become the god of play and unite the world by having equality between the human race and all other races within this world. Each episode features a game which varies greatly from the previous. From living chess to an interactive video game, each game must be handled differently depending on the opponent.

The Review:

There is very little I can tell about this series without including major spoilers since it’s so short and so detailed. Twelve episodes isn’t enough to understand the entire story which flows perfectly. There are no filler episodes, which is the best part of this series. Each episode is necessary to the story and makes you actually wonder if they really can win, right up until the end. This show pulls you into the fantasy and I need more of this in my life. I need a season 2 immediately. I would give this a perfect score but it’s been forever and I still don’t have any news of season two. My hope is slowing dying along with my interest in this amazing series.

Final Score: 9.7/10 Power Ups
